| The Past Mark began his Martial Arts training in Hawaii at the age of 7, which was in Judo. He continued his training later when he moved to California to study with his father, Mark Sr. This was on Sept. 27, 1972. The Dojo was in the basement of the Carpenter's Union Hall that was located at the time at 3065 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto, California. There is nothing of the old building there now as the land an building was sold and demolished and some new condominiums were built on the site. It used to be known as "the Dungeon." He trained for 5 years there at which time he earned the rank of Shodan Ninjitsu Master from his father. He then moved back to Hawaii to pursue more knowledge about healing arts and learn from different Kahuna. During that time he taught students the Saito family art. There was three others schools that existed. One was from Shannon K. Phelps in Des Moines, Iowa and the other was Mr. Sam Ishigo on the Big Island of Hawaii in Honomu. Mark's brother, Maui Hans Saito kept the school going for a while along with their Dad Mark Sr. in Mountain View, California. They both stopped teaching in 1978, when Maui moved back to Hawaii too. Then, in 1983, Mark Jr. decided to move back to California with the birth of his first son Asa and start the Dojo again. This was located at 1957 B. Old Middlefield Road in Mountain View. He kept this one open for teaching students till the end of 1987 at which time he stopped teaching formally and started teaching his understanding of the martial arts and huna arts with several different companies like, Creative Allies, Mr. Michael Avery, Creative Options, Ken and Paula Hatton, International Association of Entreprenuers, Mr. Bill Dempsey, SAGE Seminars and the Nine Gates Mystery School with Dr. Gay Luce. It was while teaching in different venues and locations all around the U.S. mainland that he saw the profound value that the Martial Arts and Kahuna Arts held for people. In 1993 he moved back to Hawaii this time to live and deepen his own awareness of the culture, and the different places on the islands that held power. He taught the Ninjitsu arts again for a while and has recently closed this chapter in his life. Still teaching at the Nine Gates Mystery School, he has incorporated what he learned from the different teachers whom he studied with. He also started doing his own workshops and trainings. One of the most fascinating trainings that he is doing and has done is the Warrior Training Camp. Over the years he has traveled to many places and met many people along the way. He wants to thank any and all those students, teachers, friends and family who have been a part of his journey. Of the many friends and teachers he has met and trained with, he owes much of his Martial Arts success to one man named Shannon Kawika Phelps. "Everyone should have such a friend." Another person who has been close to him in his training is his brother Maui. |
